Before theme parks and viral attractions, @cityofe Before theme parks and viral attractions, @cityofelmonte was home to one of the strangest tourist destinations in America: Gay’s Lion Farm 🦁 Opened in 1924 by Charles Gay and his wife, the farm began as a breeding and training facility for lions used in Hollywood films during the silent movie era. At its peak, more than 200 lions lived there just outside Los Angeles 🦁🎥 The farm quickly became internationally famous. Visitors paid 25 cents to watch feeding demonstrations, pose with lion cubs and see giant cats up close 👀 Celebrities, movie stars and even Fist Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited the attraction during its heyday ✨ One of the farm’s most famous residents was Jackie the Lion, a Hollywood animal actor who appeared in over 100 films. Lions connected to the farm were also tied to @amazonmgmstudios iconic roaring mascot 🦁🎬 In 1941, during the start of World War II, the farm closed after wartime meat shortages made it impossible to feed so many animals. The lions were relocated to zoos and circuses across the country 🎪 Today, almost nothing remains of the original property. But for nearly two decades, El Monte was known as the place where hundreds of lions roared just outside the city 🐾 If you want to visit, it’s at the intersection of Peck Rd and Valley Blvd!
